Expert Advisory Groups

The British Pharmacopoeia Commission appoints experts from the pharmaceutical industry, academia, regulators and hospital pharmacies as members of its Expert Advisory Groups and Panels of Experts. These experts are appointed according to their technical expertise and experience to advise and assist in the development of new and revised texts for inclusion in the British Pharmacopoeia.

The work is predominantly focused on the production of national specifications for formulation monographs. Technical advice is also obtained from the groups on proposed new and revised monographs for inclusion in the European Pharmacopoeia.

The membership of Expert Advisory Groups and Panels of Experts is reviewed by the British Pharmacopoeia Commission on a regular basis.

Expert Advisory Groups

Currently there are eight Expert Advisory Groups, three of which advise on medicinal chemicals, and the remainder on antibiotics, pharmacy, herbal and complementary medicines, nomenclature and unlicensed medicines. The Groups meet on a regular basis, usually once or twice a year.

Panels of Experts

Currently there are six Panels of Experts. The Panels are responsible for biological and biotechnological products, blood products, inorganic and general chemicals, microbiology, radioactive materials and veterinary immunological products. Unlike the Expert Advisory Groups the Panels are ad hoc groups and their remit mainly covers European Pharmacopoeia specifications and advice is normally sought by correspondence.

Working Parties

Currently there is one Working Party advising the BP Commission on excipients. Working Parties are normally formed on an ad hoc basis to cover particular areas of interest and provide specialist advice.
